Monmouth County’s historic county seat: a compact, walkable borough centered on Downtown Freehold, Main Street and the courthouse district.
Freehold Borough is a separate municipality completely surrounded by Freehold Township. The borough was incorporated in 1879 and became fully separate from the township in 1919. NJTGO treats the municipal boundary—not the broader Freehold 07728 mailing area—as the rule for every borough listing.
Schools
The Freehold Borough School District serves PreK–8 through Freehold Learning Center, Park Avenue Elementary and Freehold Intermediate School. Freehold High School, part of the Freehold Regional High School District, serves grades 9–12.
Downtown Freehold
Main Street and the surrounding downtown blocks form the borough’s restaurant, shopping, professional-services and civic core.
Historic districts
Freehold Borough recognizes the Downtown, Broad Street and Peach Orchard historic districts, reflecting the borough’s long role as Monmouth County’s governmental and commercial center.
